John and the Pahlavan tells the story of a documentary filmmaker and Iranian immigrant, Jahangir Golestan-Parast on his quest to straighten the misconceptions of his native home. Living in the greater Los Angeles area, 66 year old Jahangir re-discovers amateur wrestling in the spring of 2016. Watching wrestling, Jahangir is reminded of his youth in Iran and he learns of a common link both Iranian and American cultures share through the sport.

Admiring the passion and talent that both team Iran and team USA carry, Jahangir makes it his goal to film and document the 2016 World Wrestling Cup in Los Angeles in an effort to educate the public on two cultures that are politically divided. In the oldest and most combative sport mankind has ever known, Jahangir meets fans, coaches and athletes from both Iran and the USA.
